This past weekend some 40,000 shareholders listened to Warren Buffett field questions at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting. Although Buffett is incredibly skilled at answering a broad variety of questions, the most popular had to do with the apparent insider trading violations committed by David Sokol. Sokol, who had long been rumored to be Buffett’s successor, resigned after it was determined he purchased shares in a company that Sokol later encouraged Buffett to acquire without fully disclosing his ownership.

This week marks the two year anniversary of the stock markets hitting rock bottom. On March 9 of 2009 the Dow sunk to 6,500 and the S&P 500 fell to 675.

When I was twenty four years old I was finishing my MBA, well on my way to a life of riches—or so I thought. I was invincible. It was only a matter of time before I was on the Forbes 400 wealthiest people list. The only thing that rivaled my future estimated wealth was my oversized ego.

Like many couples, Carol and I are quite different when it comes to money management habits. Carol chuckles that she has had a checkbook since she was twelve, and it has never balanced. She also claims that black shoes are her favorite investment category. Being a Certified Financial Planner, you can imagine that my money habits are a bit different. Despite these differences, we make it work. However, it requires some creativity, patience and an occasional referee.

Many years ago as I was learning the financial planning trade I was working with a husband and wife. “Bill” was nearing retirement and he and “Janet” were trying to make some critical decisions. With New Year’s resolutions come a variety of things on our To Do list. Often we want to get in shape, pay down debt or spend more time with family. Almost never is “prepare to die” on that list.
