How to choose the right bank for your business

Choosing the right bank to support your growing business can be a challenge. From small community banks with one location all the way up to large national banks with an ATM on every corner, there’s no shortage of options available. It can be difficult to know which bank will offer the convenience and access to credit you need without sacrificing the level of service you want.

Access to credit

The largest national banks base their decisions about financing and lines of credit entirely on numbers, leaving bankers with little to no flexibility. Because these banks work on a national level, they rarely take local market conditions into consideration. If your business model wouldn’t work everywhere, they are likely unwilling to give it a second look.

Community banks, on the other hand, have a high degree of flexibility in their decision-making. They are likely to consider more factors, including the local market and the applicant’s character. Small business owners looking to get a fledgling business off the ground will likely have better luck working with a banker at a smaller community bank than applying for a loan or line of credit at one of the larger national banks.


National banks have deep pockets and connected networks, putting them on the cutting edge of online banking convenience. In fact, customers of most large banks are usually able to handle nearly all of their own banking tasks through a customer portals. However, because these online banking systems are built to work for most businesses, they generally do not offer flexibility or custom options for businesses who have more complicated needs.

Unfortunately, community banks are generally behind the curve, offering limited access to online self-service options. While small business owners may appreciate the ease of access to capital their community banks offer, they may find themselves frustrated by their inability to handle simple banking tasks outside of business hours (and without involving a banker).
