While the final two months of the year are commonly considered the holiday season, at many companies they are also home to another annual tradition: Performance review season.

When done properly, annual reviews can play a vital role in increasing every organization’s productivity. They can assist in employee development efforts, help gauge morale and determine levels of employee engagement. Performance reviews can even pave the way toward higher employee retention rates.

For many managers, the real nightmares come after Halloween.

Employee time-off requests pour in throughout the months of November and December. It often feels like every worker wants to be out during the week of Thanksgiving and throughout the two weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year's Day.  However, the problem in many workplaces is that not everyone can be gone at once. The situation frequently leads to tensions between coworkers competing for the same vacation days. At the same time, managers may feel like they are under siege. They are trying their best to be fair, but are worried that approving too many vacation requests will leave the office understaffed and unproductive.

Websites like CareerBuilder.com are a common destination for online employment seekers.  Job searching websites also aid companies of all sizes in their recruitment efforts. When business owners are asked about the biggest risks facing companies, they tend to think of physical losses: property damage, computer hacking or theft. However, a common (but less obvious threat) may pose an equally daunting risk: disengaged employees.

Historically, many companies schedule their annual community involvement events and giving campaigns for the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Now that 2016 is upon us, some might say the charitable season is over. However, companywide community service efforts do not need to be limited to the holiday season. There are plenty of good reasons to encourage volunteerism in the workplace the entire year.
